EURA to power the next generation of European military rotorcraft

EURA stands for EUropean Military Rotorcraft Engine Alliance. The company focuses on the development of a new high-performance turbo-shaft engine to power the next generation of European military rotorcraft. EURA is joint venture between Safran Helicopter Engines and MTU Aero Engines, thus combining the best of Europe’s aerospace companies’ resources and expertise.

MTU and Safran are convinced that the European armed forces need a modern, 100% European military helicopter engine that is to enter service in the 2040s – at affordable operating and maintenance costs.

While this program contributes to further reinforce European sovereignty and to strengthen the European high-tech supply chain, it also enables the development of new technologies such as hybrid-electric propulsion.

A 100 % European Engine

In the 2040ies, the majority of Europe’s combat helicopter fleet needs to be replaced. That is why the partners intend to develop the engine for a new military rotorcraft from 2030 onwards – wholly designed, developed, produced and supported in Europe. To a specific call in the European Defence Fund (EDF), EURA intends to respond together with a capable consortium of partners.

The engine is intended to be adaptable and capable to serve different airframe configurations from conventional through compound to tilt-rotor designs.
